Meeting The Characters
Employees at businesses around the world work hard every day, and deserve to be compensated and thanked for their efforts. One of the many ways employees are thanked is during the holidays, when the company will shell out a small bonus. It’s a nice way for the employees to know their hard work is noticed, and a good way for the company to show they appreciate everything they’ve done. Unfortunately, sometimes issues can arise with this process.
One Reddit user, “Grace,” was caught in an irritating situation when her manager refused to give her holiday pay for not coming in when she wasn’t even on the schedule. Luckily for her, Grace was able to get her revenge using just one sentence.
Trying To Enjoy The Holidays
Around Thanksgiving, Grace’s company closed for a week to celebrate the holidays. Grace enjoyed a wonderful week with her family, full of laughs, good food, and some good old fashion family bonding. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and Grace had to get ready to go back to work the following week. Luckily for her, she still had one last day of vacation as she doesn’t work Mondays.
So, imagine her surprise when her manager called her later that day and said she was scheduled to work. In all of the years she had worked there, Grace never worked on Mondays, so it was a complete surprise to hear she had been scheduled.
Since she did not show up, this meant she would not be getting her holiday pay. The company policy was employees had to work their last scheduled shift before a holiday break, and the first shift scheduled after the break.
Grace tried to explain how she was told she would only be working Tuesdays to Saturdays, and that she had children at home to watch. Her manager, “Lyndsie,” was not sympathetic in the slightest and uttered a phrase Grace would never forget.
A Rare Opportunity
“It is your responsibility to check the schedule every week because we don’t have set schedules,” Lyndsie told her.
A few weeks later, Grace was still pretty steamed over the situation. She was a diligent and resourceful employee, and it was not fair she didn’t get her holiday pay over a misunderstanding. However, things seem to be looking her way when she got to work one day and saw she wasn’t scheduled to work the following Saturday.
Not one to complain about a random and unexpected day off, Grace happily and quietly accepted the rare 3-day weekend. Since she wasn’t on the schedule, then why should Grace have to go in?
Unsurprisingly, Grace’s phone lit up with calls from work, demanding that she show up. Grace let them all go to voicemail, and was putting her phone away when she got a text message from Lyndsie.
“[The] schedule never changes,” the text read. “It will be a no call/no show on [your] attendance record for not coming in to work.”
Armed with the perfect response, Grace knew just what to fire back.
Returning To Work
“I am not on the schedule, and so I’m not required to come in,” Grace responded. “It is my responsibility to check the schedule every week because we don’t have set schedules.”
Satisfied with her answer, Grace headed into work the following Tuesday. Lyndsie immediately descended upon her, demanding to know why she didn’t come in for her unscheduled shift on Saturday, and what she was doing. Grace replied it wasn’t her business what she was doing, and she wasn’t on the schedule so technically she didn’t have to show up. Lyndsie seemingly accepted this answer and walked away, for the time being.
Grace’s peace was shattered an hour later when Lyndsie called her into her office. Except, when she opened the door, Grace discovered there was another person joining them.
Austin Was Missing A Vital Piece Of Information
Sitting in one of the chairs was Grace’s manager, “Austin.” With her captive audience ready, Lyndsie launched into a spiel about how Grace was going to be written up as a “no call/no show” due to her absence on Saturday.
Grace stood her ground, refusing to sign the form since she wasn’t even scheduled to work that day. Austin seemed confused about the mix-up since Lyndsie didn’t tell him she didn’t schedule Grace for work on Saturday.
Grace could tell Lyndsie was about to do some major back-tracking to try to get out of this situation, but Grace came prepared.
Pulling out her phone, Grace showed Austin a picture of the schedule from the previous week. The proof was in the pudding, and the evidence was undeniable that Grace should not be written up as a call/no show.
Not willing to back down, Lyndsie claimed Grace should have “[known] what [her] normal schedule [was] as a full-time employee, and so [she] should have clarified that it wasn’t a mistake.”
Reeling in her rage, Grace knew just how to answer her.
Getting The Last Word
“[It’s not] my responsibility to double-check the schedule they put out [each week],” Grace stated. “I was told my responsibility was to check the schedule every week because we don’t have set schedules.”
Flabbergasted, Lyndsie started to say something about how a situation like this should be handled in the future. But, Grace had enough and cut her off by asking to return work.
After a couple of minutes of going back and forth, Grace decided she did not want to put up with the stupidity anymore. When she was done writing a note declaring this to be her last day, Grace dropped the note off on Lyndsie’s desk and walked out of the door to bigger and better things.
Grace may not have gotten her holiday pay, but she got something just as good; she was able to expose Lyndsie’s lies and put her in her place. Hopefully after this incident, Lyndsie created a more effective schedule!
