The majority of us see our daily lives as so normal and the world around us as so mundane, that we rarely stop to consider how quickly it has changed. For Otis Johnson, however, navigating those changes is the center of his existence.
Johnson was just 25 years old when he was sent to prison for attempted murder after assaulting a police officer. Last summer, after 44 years in prison, he was released at age 69. When he left prison with an ID, $40 and two bus tickets in his pocket, he found himself in a world he didn't even recognize.
Al Jazeera followed him through a day in his life, and his reaction to current society is astounding.

Upon walking around the streets in New York for the first time, he was confused to see what appeared to be a bunch of people talking to themselves. Upon closer examination, he found they had wires leading to their ears (earbuds, of course) and wondered if everyone around him might be working for the CIA!
Another excellent scene takes place while he shops for groceries and marvels at the combination of peanut butter and jelly in a single jar.
We'll avoid spoiling the rest of the events in the video, as it really is worth a watch. The video is a thought-provoking portrait of a man acclimating to an entirely foreign environment he used to call home, and we highly recommend it.
